Learn
to Play
Daytona Beach Pipes & Drums
sees
the importance of providing instruction for new students. The
band and the students both benefit, so we do not charge for bagpipe or
drum lessons. We do ask that once you have become proficient, you
seriously consider remaining with the band.
We currently provide lessons to new students at Embry Riddle
Aeronautical University, in room B513 at 6:00pm every monday
night. If you are thinking about learning, please contact us at info@daytonapipeband.org.
If you are unable to make the standard times, we can work with you to
find another suitable time.
Learning
the Bagpipe
It is often said
that the
bagpipe is one of the hardest instruments to learn. Thus,
students start out lessons on a practice chanter. The practice
chanter looks similar to a recorder, and provides good practice with
fingering without the complications of a bag or drones. You will
learn to play the scale, gracenotes, embellishments, and simple
tunes. Once you have a few tunes down, you will be assisted in
finding a suitable bagpipe. The time it takes to progress to the
bagpipe is mostly dependent on your level of commitment. The
average person takes from 3-9 months to progress to the full pipes.
We recommend the McCallum
Long Polypenco practice chanter, however
any British, American, Canadian, or Irish made practice chanter should
suffice. Be sure to contact us before purchasing one. They
are also available through the band. We require that you purchase
the College
of Piping Tutor (Vol 1).
Learning the Drum
The drumming in a
pipe
band is truly what adds dynamics and completes the sound. Drums
are essential to any pipe band; this is the reason Daytona Beach Pipes
& Drums has begun a serious initiative at forming a solid drum
corp. We can provide basic instruction on Monday nights.
Additional lessons are provided by Leah Williams, a grade 2 snare
drummer and drum sergeant of Rosie Ogrady's Highlanders, once per
month, on the weekends, at no charge. Leah can provide
instruction on snare, tenor, and bass. We have compiled videos of
Leah's lessons and can provide them for supplemental learning.
Snare drum students will need a practice pad in sticks. We
encourage you to buy the same kind that the rest of the band has.
We recommend the Lion's
Paw practice pad and KP1
drumsticks.
